“The question is not, — how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education — but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?”
― Charlotte M. Mason

What did your child do today?

Is the Mason method similar to Maria Montessori? Somewhat, but different. Is it similar to the modern classical school movement? Yes, but different.

Holding short lessons to prevent the attention focus from wandering.

Reading from living books so a child learns to deal directly with books.

Respecting the personhood of the child.

Developing strong character habits to last a lifetime.

Honoring our Christian faith in every academic subject.

Delighting in the wonder and awe of God’s beautiful world.

Presenting a hefty feast of ideas on which a child’s mind is eager to feed.

Seaside Cottage School, located in lovely Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is a one, two, or three-day-a-week elementary and middle school tutorial ministry where students read from primary source books and compose answers longhand. An old-fashioned education meeting the needs of the 21st Century.

Less is More….

As a Cottage School, we don’t meet 180 days a year for 7 hours a day. We have a short year, a short week, and a short day.

Good is the enemy of great….

With less time in the classroom, our students have more time to be where children are meant to be…outside. Running, climbing, building, exploring, and observing. A Charlotte Mason lesson is very efficient. We present the Topic, inspire the child, and allow the mind to do its amazing work of choosing the ideas about which it will take on as “knowledge.”

“Thought breeds thought; children familiar with great thoughts take as naturally to thinking for themselves as the well-nourished body takes to growing; and we must bear in mind that growth, physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, is the sole end of education.”
― Charlotte M. Mason

“Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of a child’s nature.”
