The child’s mind is the instrument of his education; his education does not produce his mind.
— Charlotte Mason
The Mission of Seaside Cottage School is to train up children in the way they should go by presenting them with a feast of ideas which are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, virtuous, and praiseworthy so they will be able to filter life’s experiences through a Biblical worldview, labor in the Great Commission, and, in all they say and do, bring glory to God.
At Seaside Cottage School, we use Charlotte Mason‘s methods as she was a Godly woman who treated each child as a unique and precious gift from God. We use topics selected from her schools located near Ambleside, England at the end of the 19th century. We use a literary-focused, arts-focused curriculum and history books with a Judeo-Christian Worldview.
Is the Mason method similar to Maria Montessori? Somewhat, but different. Is it similar to the modern classical school movement? Yes, but different. Short lessons and living books. Lengthening attention spans and presenting topics by Socratic method. Respecting the personhood of the child while expecting a mature amount of self-control. We present a hefty feast of ideas on which a child’s mind is eager to feed.
Seaside Cottage School, located in lovely Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is a three-day-a-week elementary school program where students read from primary source books and compose answers longhand. An old-fashioned education, meeting the needs of the 21st Century.
To find out more about Charlotte Mason and her method, visit one of the sites below.* When you want something more for your children than contemporary-style education, consider a method where less is more! Children need to play outside in the afternoon! Children need to hear language-rich literature! Children need to hear about honorable people who lived long ago! Children need to hear beautiful music! Children need to study beautiful works of art! Children need to explore God’s beautiful creation! This is hands-on, ears-open, enjoyable and inspiring. Welcome to “the gentle art of learning!”
